MwAPATA Executive Director, Mr. William Chadza speaking to the media

On 15th to 18th March 2022, Dr. Maggie Munthali joined other 30 African women representatives working in Earth observation and other space related fields to highlight their needs in terms of inclusivity.

This was the first Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) and Africa Women workshop that was convened by the African Union Commission (AUC) at the kick-off and award ceremony of the second phase of the GMES & Africa Programme in Cotonou, Benin.

The workshop was borne out of the set implementing requirements of the GMES & Africa phase 2, a decision to include 30% of women specialized in EO-related fields as part of the eight Awarded consortia’s teams. Dr. Munthali was thus elected into the governing council as a Research lead.

Cyclone Ana disrupted livelihoods and agri-food systems, particularly human lives, household assets, production, transport, distribution, markets and preparation for consumption.

It is important to consider various short-, medium- and long- term measures as shared in our policy brief number 19  and in a statement made by the MwAPATA Executive Director, Mr. William Chadza here.

On 24th and 25th January 2022, Malawi especially Chikwawa and Nsanje districts were highly affected with heavy rains that resulted in flooding leaving communities no place to stay nor cultivate.

About 10 media houses were invited to a media briefing on the impact Russia's invasion of Ukraine would have on Malawi's food security and implications on policy.

MwAPATA Executive Director Mr. Chadza said the war would have an effect on Malawi in three fronts, energy and transport costs, food prices, and fertilizer prices. "It is therefore prudent to consider steps that could be taken to ease the forthcoming burden,"said Chadza.

MwAPATA has recently published a policy brief on the same and is available here.
