The 2020/21 Affordable Inputs Program: Key Implementation Issues and Messages

First release: April 12, 2021

Three Institutions - MwAPATA, the Policy Support for Agricultural Transformation Project, and the European Union Delegation in Malawi - undertook independent assessments of the inaugural year of the AIP. This brief synthesizes these to highlight consistently noted successes and challenges.

The studies are based on interviews with key public officials at various levels and other stakeholders, a household survey, and focus group discussions with farmers. They assessed the implementation of the AIP from program design to beneficiaries’ redemption of inputs; characterized key stakeholders’ experiences with the program; documented the early implementation successes and challenges; and identified areas for improvement in the implementation. Several themes and recommendations for improvement emerge from the meta-analysis summarized in this Policy Brief.
