Background
The First Ten Year Implementation Plan (MIP1) of the Malawi 2063 has clearly set out specific actions, timelines, and indicators for the effective contribution of the agriculture sector to Malawi’s quest of graduating into a middle-income economy and achieving most of the Sustainable Development Goals by the year 2030. Under Pillar 1 of the Malawi 2063, MIP1 seeks to have an optimally productive and commercialized agriculture sector with focused investments in seven inter-linked priority areas of agricultural diversification; irrigation; anchor farms; farm inputs; mechanization; structured markets; and agricultural research, innovation, and dissemination.
In support of the implementation of the Pillar 1 of the MIP1, the MwAPATA Institute, the National Planning Commission (NPC,) and the Ministry of Agriculture launched in June 2021 the Malawi Agricultural Productivity and Commercialization Conference (MAPCC).The purpose of these annual series of conferences is to bring together the stakeholders in the agricultural sector including, government ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), farmer’s organizations, the donor community, civil society, private firms, the media, and academia to take stock of achievements and constraints faced while implementing the Pillar 1 of the MIP1, and to deliberate on how to overcome the challenges faced going forward.
The inaugural MAAPC held in June 2021 with the main theme: Supporting Agriculture Transformation in Malawi: Beyond Research to Implementation was intended to lay the baseline foundation of the policy research agenda to inform the better implementation of the Pillar 1 of the MIP1. The MAPCC 2022 will be held in June with the theme, Driving Agricultural Diversification in Support of the Aspirations of MW2063, which seeks to provide research evidence to promote and strengthen the agricultural diversification objective of the MIP1.
