Banana Commercialisation and Investment Options for Malawi
First release: August 24th, 2026
The Malawian banana value chain is highly attractive, with key players achieving decent gross margins that demonstrate its commercialization potential. However, the sector's competitiveness is constrained by structural production challenges, weak off-farm linkages, and limited formal market supply chain services. As a result, Malawi still imports approximately 15% of its domestic banana consumption from Tanzania and Mozambique. This policy brief explores opportunities to expand domestic banana production and enhance competitiveness. It highlights how addressing weak seed systems, pest and disease outbreaks, low productivity driven by poor management practices, and limited irrigation investment can unlock the commercialization potential of the banana value chain.
